About the Broch

The word ‘broch’ derives from the Norse word ‘borg’ (meaning fort) which was probably first applied to these ruined structures by Viking raiders during the 9th century AD.Few prehistoric monuments are more immediately evocative than the broch towers of Scotland, with their grim and outwardly featureless stone walls scattered across the fragmented landscapes of the Highland and Islands, often formidably perched on rugged outcrops or inaccessible islets.

But the Broch Cafe is different, set in woodland surroundings with external walls of stone and larch in modern form, internally simple, but inviting, with quality food, hot and cold drinks and a warm welcome always assured.
